Before You Go

Thank you for choosing Sri Lanka as your next travel destination. Whether you're visiting for a relaxing beach holiday, a cultural adventure, wildlife safari, or scenic train journey, a little preparation will help you enjoy a smooth and memorable experience.

This guide covers everything you need to know before arriving in Sri Lanka. If you have any questions, our team is always happy to help.

Passport & Visa Requirements

Before travelling, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of arrival in Sri Lanka.

Most international visitors require a visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering the country. Visa requirements may vary depending on your nationality, so we recommend checking the latest regulations well before your departure.

Keep a digital and printed copy of your passport, travel insurance, flight details, and hotel confirmations in case they are requested during your journey.

Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a year-round destination thanks to its two monsoon seasons. While one part of the island may experience rain, another region usually enjoys sunny weather.

December to April

This is the best season for:

  • South Coast beaches

  • West Coast beaches

  • Colombo

  • Galle

  • Bentota

  • Mirissa

  • Hikkaduwa

  • Yala National Park

  • Hill Country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella)

May to September

Ideal for visiting:

  • East Coast beaches

  • Trincomalee

  • Nilaveli

  • Pasikuda

  • Arugam Bay

  • Minneriya National Park

  • Cultural Triangle

No matter when you visit, we can design an itinerary that matches the best weather conditions.

Climate & What to Wear

Sri Lanka has a warm tropical climate throughout the year.

Average temperatures:

  • Coastal areas: 27–32°C

  • Cultural Triangle: 28–35°C

  • Hill Country: 15–24°C

Pack lightweight cotton clothing for most of your trip. If you’re travelling to higher elevations such as Nuwara Eliya, Haputale, or Ella, bring a light jacket or sweater for cool mornings and evenings.

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for sightseeing, hiking, and archaeological sites.

Currency & Money

The official currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR).

Cash is useful for:

  • Local restaurants

  • Small shops

  • Markets

  • Tuk-tuks

  • Tips

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, supermarkets, larger restaurants, and shopping centres.

ATMs are available throughout the country, including airports and major towns.

Many hotels also accept international payment cards.

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not compulsory.

General guidelines:

  • Tour Driver: according to the length of your tour and your satisfaction

  • Local Guides: a small gratuity is appreciated

  • Hotel Porters: a modest tip per bag

  • Restaurants: many restaurants include a service charge, but leaving a little extra for excellent service is always welcomed.

Language

Sri Lanka has two official languages:

  • Sinhala

  • Tamil

English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, and by tour guides, making it easy for international visitors to communicate throughout the country.

Electricity

Sri Lanka uses:

  • 230V electricity

  • 50Hz frequency

Many hotels provide universal sockets, but carrying a universal travel adapter is recommended.

Power interruptions can occasionally occur, particularly in rural areas.

Internet & Mobile Connectivity

Free Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, cafés, and restaurants.

For better coverage during your trip, you may wish to purchase a local SIM card or activate an eSIM upon arrival. Mobile coverage is generally good across most of the island, including many tourist destinations.

Health & Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance before travelling.

Your policy should ideally cover:

  • Medical emergencies

  • Trip cancellations

  • Lost luggage

  • Personal belongings

  • Adventure activities if applicable

Bring sufficient prescription medication for your stay and keep it in its original packaging.

Drink bottled or filtered water and stay hydrated, especially during sightseeing.

Mosquito repellent is recommended, particularly in the evenings and in wildlife areas.

Food & Drinking Water

Sri Lankan cuisine is famous for its rich flavours and spices.

Popular dishes include:

  • Rice and Curry

  • Hoppers

  • Kottu Roti

  • String Hoppers

  • Seafood

  • Fresh Tropical Fruits

Vegetarian and vegan meals are widely available.

If you have food allergies or dietary requirements, please inform us before your arrival so we can assist with meal arrangements.

We recommend drinking bottled or filtered water throughout your stay.

Temple Etiquette

Sri Lanka is home to many beautiful Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, and Muslim places of worship.

When visiting temples:

  • Cover your shoulders and knees.

  • Remove shoes and hats before entering.

  • Speak quietly and respectfully.

  • Avoid turning your back towards Buddha statues when taking photographs.

  • Follow any instructions provided by temple staff.

Respecting local customs helps preserve Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage and ensures a meaningful experience for everyone.

Wildlife & Nature

Sri Lanka is one of the world’s top wildlife destinations.

If you plan to visit national parks:

  • Wear neutral-coloured clothing.

  • Keep noise to a minimum.

  • Never feed wild animals.

  • Stay inside the safari vehicle unless instructed otherwise.

  • Respect park rules and your guide’s advice.

Responsible tourism helps protect Sri Lanka’s incredible wildlife for future generations.

Transportation

Travelling around Sri Lanka offers breathtaking scenery, but journey times may be longer than expected.

Although destinations may appear close on a map, winding mountain roads and local traffic can increase travel times.

Our professional drivers focus on safe and comfortable travel, allowing you to relax and enjoy the journey.

Shopping

Popular souvenirs include:

  • Ceylon Tea

  • Handcrafted wooden carvings

  • Batik clothing

  • Gemstones

  • Spices

When purchasing gemstones, buy only from reputable dealers and request certification.
